Why Doesn’t AI Mention My Business? 8 Reasons and How to Fix Them

AI assistants only name businesses they can find, read and trust. If yours is missing, one of these 8 things is usually the reason.

Short answer: ChatGPT, Google’s AI (Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode), Perplexity and Copilot recommend businesses that their search systems can crawl, that clearly say what they do and where, and that other trusted websites also mention. Most Nigerian businesses that AI ignores are either blocked from AI crawlers, not properly indexed, or too vague and too little-mentioned online for AI to be confident about them. All of these can be fixed.

How AI Assistants Decide Which Businesses to Name

When someone asks “best accountant in Lagos” or “who can build an app in Nigeria”, an AI assistant does two things. It uses what it learned in training, and for questions about businesses and prices it usually searches the web live, reads the top sources and writes an answer from them. Each assistant searches a different index:

AI assistantWhere its live answers come fromWhat that means for you
ChatGPTOpenAI’s own search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) plus search partnersYour site must allow OAI-SearchBot and be well indexed on the open web
Google Gemini, AI Overviews, AI ModeGoogle’s search index and Google Business ProfilesClassic Google SEO and your Google Maps profile matter most
Microsoft CopilotBing’s indexYour site must be in Bing, which many Nigerian sites never submit to
PerplexityIts own crawler (PerplexityBot) and the webYour site must allow PerplexityBot and be cited by other sites

The pattern is the same everywhere: if the AI cannot reach your website, cannot understand it, or cannot find anyone else confirming you exist, it names someone else.

The 8 Reasons AI Doesn’t Mention Your Business

1. Your website blocks AI crawlers

A line in your robots.txt file, a security plugin or a Cloudflare setting can block ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude without you knowing. Many website templates and hosting setups do this by default. Fix: run our free AI Crawler Checker. It shows which of 17 AI crawlers are blocked and the exact line to change.

2. Your website is not properly indexed on Google or Bing

If Google has not indexed your pages, Gemini and AI Overviews cannot use them. If Bing has not, Copilot and part of ChatGPT’s search cannot. Fix: verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and read why your website is not showing on Google.

3. Your website doesn’t clearly say what you do, where and for whom

AI answers questions like “affordable interior designer in Abuja”. If your homepage says “We deliver excellence and innovative solutions”, the AI cannot match you to that question. Fix: state your service, city and customer in plain words near the top of each page, for example “Interior design for homes and offices in Abuja, from ₦500,000”.

4. You don’t answer the questions your customers ask

AI assistants quote pages that answer the exact question. If nobody on your website explains prices, timelines or how to choose, the AI quotes a competitor or a blog that does. Fix: publish direct, answer-first pages for your top buyer questions, with naira prices where you can.

5. Nobody else on the internet mentions you

AI trusts businesses that other sources confirm: directories, news articles, “best of” lists, reviews and industry sites. A business that only exists on its own website and Instagram looks risky to recommend. Fix: get listed on trusted directories, collect Google reviews and earn mentions in Nigerian publications.

6. Your business details are inconsistent

A different business name, address or phone number on your website, Google profile and directories makes it harder for AI to be sure all of them are the same business. Fix: use exactly the same name, address, phone number and description everywhere.

7. Your important information is hidden in images or scripts

Prices in a flyer image, services in a PDF or text that only appears after JavaScript runs are often invisible to AI crawlers. Fix: put key facts in real text on the page. Check what AI can read with our free AI Visibility Checker.

8. No schema markup tells machines who you are

Schema is hidden code that states your business name, type, location, services and prices in a format machines understand. Without it, AI has to guess. Fix: add Organization or LocalBusiness schema, plus Service and FAQ schema on key pages.

Why ChatGPT Doesn’t Mention Your Business

For ChatGPT, the most common causes are reasons 1, 2 and 5: OAI-SearchBot is blocked, your site is thin in the web index ChatGPT searches, or no other site mentions you. ChatGPT also tends to favour businesses that appear in lists and articles it finds while searching. Our full guide explains every step: how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.

Why Google’s AI Doesn’t Mention Your Business

Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google’s own index and on Google Business Profiles. If you don’t rank in normal Google results and your Google Maps profile is missing or incomplete, Google’s AI rarely names you. Check Your Business in 5 Minutes

  1. Ask like a customer. In ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, ask three questions a buyer would ask, such as “best [your service] in [your city]”. Note who is named.
  2. Check your crawlers. Run the AI Crawler Checker on your website.
  3. Check what AI can read. Run the AI Visibility Checker for a score out of 100 and your top 3 fixes.
  4. Search your name. Google your business name and see which other websites mention you. Fewer than five is a warning sign.

How Long Does It Take for AI to Start Mentioning You?

Unblocking crawlers and fixing indexing can show up within weeks, because live AI search reads your site as it is today. Building the trust signals that make AI choose you over competitors, such as reviews, directory listings and mentions, usually takes three to six months. No one can guarantee AI mentions, because OpenAI, Google and others control their answers, but the businesses that fix these eight things consistently get named more often. This work is called generative engine optimization (GEO).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

You can buy ChatGPT ads in some countries, but ads appear in a separate labelled block and OpenAI states they do not change the answer. The recommendation itself cannot be bought; it has to be earned through the steps above.

Does AI search work in Nigeria?

Yes. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot all work in Nigeria, and Google’s AI Mode launched in Nigeria in August 2025, adding Yorùbá and Hausa support in 2026.

Is this different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Most AI answers are drawn from search indexes, so good SEO is the foundation. GEO adds the extra steps that make AI choose and quote you: clear answers, schema and third-party mentions.

Why does AI mention my competitor and not me?

Usually because your competitor is mentioned on more trusted websites, answers more buyer questions on their own site, or has a stronger Google Business Profile with more reviews.
