What you will really pay to put an AI assistant on your WhatsApp Business number in 2026.
Last updated: September 2026
Short answer: a custom WhatsApp AI chatbot for a Nigerian business costs from about ₦600,000 one-off to build properly on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, plus monthly running costs: Meta’s message fees (replies to customers who message you first are free), AI usage fees that depend on volume, and optional support from about ₦30,000 a month. If you only need automatic greetings and quick replies, the free WhatsApp Business app may be enough.
The 4 Costs of a WhatsApp AI Chatbot
| Cost | What it is | Typical amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build | Designing the conversations, connecting AI to your information, setting up the WhatsApp Business Platform, testing | From ₦600,000 one-off at AD Technologies |
| 2. Meta message fees | WhatsApp’s own charges, paid in dollars | Free for replies within 24 hours of a customer’s message; about 5 US cents per marketing message to Nigerian numbers |
| 3. AI usage | Fees charged by the AI model provider (such as OpenAI or Anthropic) for each conversation | Depends on volume; billed at cost |
| 4. Support and updates | Hosting, monitoring, updating prices and answers, fixes | From ₦30,000 a month |
How Meta Charges for WhatsApp Messages
Since 1 July 2025, Meta charges per message on the WhatsApp Business Platform, and only for certain messages:
- Free: any reply your chatbot sends within 24 hours after a customer messages you. For most customer-service chatbots, this is the bulk of the traffic.
- Free: all messages for 72 hours after a customer reaches you through a Click-to-WhatsApp ad on Facebook or Instagram.
- Paid, marketing messages: promotions you send first, such as offers and announcements. Roughly 5 US cents each to Nigerian numbers.
- Paid, utility and authentication messages: order updates, reminders and login codes sent outside the 24-hour window. Around 1 US cent or less for utility and about 1.5 US cents for authentication.
Meta updates these rates periodically, so always check Meta’s current rate card before planning a large campaign.
Example: A Small Business in Lagos
A fashion store receives 1,500 customer chats a month and sends one promotion a month to 1,000 customers.
- Customer chats: 1,500 conversations the customer started, answered within 24 hours. Meta fee: free.
- Promotion: 1,000 marketing messages at about 5 US cents. Meta fee: about $50.
- AI usage and support: AI fees at cost plus a care plan from ₦30,000.
The lesson: a chatbot that mainly answers customers is cheap to run. Costs grow mostly with the promotional messages you choose to send.
Your Options, From Free to Custom
| Option | Cost | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Business app | Free | Greeting and away messages, quick replies, catalogue | No real AI, one phone, no integration with your systems |
| Chatbot platform subscription | Monthly fee, usually in dollars, plus Meta fees | Standard menus and simple flows you set up yourself | Template-based, subscription never ends, limited to the platform’s features |
| Custom WhatsApp AI assistant | From ₦600,000 build, plus running costs | Answering real questions from your prices and policies, taking orders or bookings, handing over to staff | Higher upfront cost |
What Changes the Build Price
- What it needs to know: a price list and FAQs is simpler than a full product catalogue or policy manual.
- What it needs to do: answering questions is simpler than taking payments, checking stock or booking appointments.
- Integrations: connecting to Paystack, your CRM, a Google Sheet or your inventory adds work.
- Languages: English only, or also Pidgin, Yorùbá, Hausa or Igbo.
- Accuracy needs: health, finance and legal answers need more testing and safeguards.
Meta’s 2026 Rule on AI Chatbots
From 15 January 2026, Meta’s WhatsApp Business terms no longer allow general-purpose AI assistants, the kind that answer anything like ChatGPT, to be offered through the WhatsApp Business Platform. AI assistants that serve your own customers about your own business are still allowed: answering questions about your products, taking orders, booking appointments and handing over to staff. Make sure whoever builds your chatbot keeps it focused on your business.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number?
Usually yes, but a number moved to the WhatsApp Business Platform can no longer be used in the normal WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app on a phone. Many businesses use a new number for the chatbot, or move the number and use a shared inbox for staff.
Do I have to pay Meta in dollars?
Meta’s message fees are priced in dollars and charged to a card or through your provider. Customer-initiated conversations answered within 24 hours are free, so many small businesses pay Meta little or nothing.
Will the chatbot replace my staff?
It handles repeated questions instantly, day and night, and passes complex or sensitive chats to a person. Most businesses use it to respond faster and free staff for sales, not to remove them.
Is a website chatbot cheaper?
Yes. An AI chatbot on your website starts from ₦350,000 with us and has no Meta message fees. Many businesses start there and add WhatsApp later. See all prices on our pricing page.
