Why Is My WordPress Site So Slow? 9 Causes and How to Fix Them

The real reasons WordPress websites load slowly, and the fixes that make the biggest difference.

Last updated: September 2026

Short answer: most slow WordPress websites are slowed down by the same few things: large uncompressed images, no caching, cheap or overloaded hosting, and too many plugins or heavy page-builder features. Compressing images to WebP, switching on a caching plugin that matches your host and removing plugins you don’t need usually gives the biggest improvement in a single afternoon.

First, Measure Your Speed Properly

Test your homepage and your most important page in Google’s free PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev), and look at the mobile results, because most Nigerian visitors use phones. Google’s Core Web Vitals targets are:

MetricWhat it measuresGood score
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)How fast the main content appears2.5 seconds or less
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)How quickly the page reacts to taps and clicks200 milliseconds or less
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)How much the page jumps around while loading0.1 or less

The 9 Most Common Causes

1. Large, uncompressed images

A single photo straight from a phone can be 3 to 5 MB. Ten of them on a page is a disaster on mobile data. Fix: resize images and convert them to WebP. Our free WebP Image Optimizer plugin does this automatically for every upload and converts your existing library in one click. In our testing it cut a 1.4 MB photo to 290 KB.

2. No page caching

Without caching, WordPress rebuilds every page from the database for every visitor. Fix: use the caching plugin that matches your host. On LiteSpeed servers, such as many Hostinger and Namecheap plans, that is LiteSpeed Cache.

3. Cheap or overloaded hosting

Very cheap shared hosting puts hundreds of websites on one server. If the server is slow to respond, nothing else you do will fully fix it. Fix: check “server response time” in PageSpeed Insights. If it is consistently slow, move to better hosting with LiteSpeed or NGINX and SSD or NVMe storage.

4. Too many plugins

It’s not the number that matters most but what they load. Sliders, social feeds, popup builders and “all-in-one” plugins often add scripts to every page. Fix: deactivate anything you don’t use and replace heavy plugins with lighter ones.

5. A heavy theme or page builder setup

Multipurpose themes and page builders load code for features you may not use. Fix: turn on the builder’s performance settings, remove unused widgets and fonts, and avoid stacking animation effects.

6. Too many outside scripts

Chat widgets, several analytics tags, Facebook and TikTok pixels, embedded videos and web fonts all load from other servers. Fix: keep only the tracking you use, load chat widgets after the page, and show a thumbnail for videos until clicked.

7. An old PHP version

Newer PHP versions run WordPress noticeably faster and are more secure. Fix: in your hosting panel, switch to the latest PHP version your theme and plugins support, after taking a backup.

8. A bloated database

Years of post revisions, spam comments and leftovers from deleted plugins slow down database queries. Fix: clean them up with your caching or optimisation plugin, after a backup.

9. No CDN

If your server is abroad, every image travels a long way to reach Nigerian visitors. Fix: a content delivery network such as Cloudflare’s free plan serves files from locations closer to your visitors.

Why Speed Matters for Your Business

Slow pages lose visitors before they see your offer, cost mobile users more data, and weaken your Google results, because Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, in its ranking systems. If your website also isn’t appearing on Google at all, read why your website is not showing on Google.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WordPress itself slow?

No. A well-built WordPress site on good hosting can be very fast. Slowness comes from images, hosting, plugins and setup, not from WordPress itself.

Will a speed plugin fix everything?

A caching plugin helps a lot, but it cannot fix a slow server, huge images or a heavy theme. Use it alongside the other fixes above.

Why is my site fast for me but slow for customers?

Your browser has cached the site and you may be on fast Wi-Fi. Customers on mobile data visit it fresh. Always test in PageSpeed Insights on mobile.
