What Are ChatGPT Ads?
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026. In its announcement of 31 August 2026, OpenAI described how they work:
- Labelled and separate. Ads are “always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT’s answers.”
- Contextual. Ads are chosen using the context of the current conversation, and in some countries and settings, wider ChatGPT context.
- Answers stay independent. OpenAI states that “advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.”
- Private conversations stay private. Advertisers “do not receive access to people’s private conversations.”
- Free tier. Ads support ChatGPT’s free tier. In the first US test they also appeared on the lower-cost Go plan.
Are ChatGPT Ads Available in Nigeria?
Not through self-serve, as of this update. OpenAI’s announcement says ChatGPT ads are available in over 40 countries through its ads sales team and partner agencies, and that self-serve buying in Ads Manager opened on 31 August 2026 for India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Nigeria and the rest of West Africa were not named.

What Will ChatGPT Ads Cost?
There is no published pricing for Nigeria. During the early pilot, MarketingEdge reported that OpenAI cut its minimum spend from $250,000 to $50,000 and noted that early costs per thousand impressions were well above typical Meta prices in Nigeria. Self-serve Ads Manager has since opened the platform to smaller businesses. Plan for three things:
- Dollar billing. Like Google and Meta, expect to pay in US dollars with a card or account that supports international payments.
- Higher prices at first. New ad platforms are often expensive while advertisers test them. Start small and measure cost per lead.
- Intent, not reach. People see ChatGPT ads while asking a real question, so the value is in the quality of the lead, not the number of views.
