How to Get AI to Mention Your Business in Nigeria: A 30-Day Plan

To get AI to mention your business in Nigeria, make sure AI tools can read your website, describe your business the same clear way everywhere, get confirmed by trusted Nigerian directories, reviews and publications, and test the questions your customers ask every month. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Meta AI only name businesses they can find, understand and trust. This guide turns that into a 30-day plan you can follow yourself.

Which AI Assistants Nigerians Use, and Where Each One Looks

Each assistant finds businesses in a different place, so being named by one does not mean you are named by the others.

AI assistantWhere it finds businessesYour first move
ChatGPTLive web search with its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) and search partnersAllow OAI-SearchBot and get indexed on Bing and Google
Google Gemini, AI Overviews, AI ModeGoogle’s search index and Google Business ProfilesComplete your Google Business Profile and rank in normal Google results
Microsoft CopilotBing’s indexVerify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap
PerplexityIts own crawler (PerplexityBot) and the pages it citesAllow PerplexityBot and earn mentions on cited sites
Meta AIBuilt into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and MessengerKeep your website and listings clear and consistent, then test it on WhatsApp

Meta AI has been available to Nigerian users since April 2024, so many of your customers can ask an AI for recommendations without leaving WhatsApp. Google’s AI Mode is also live in Nigeria.

What the Research Shows

  • Your website is the main source. A BrightLocal study of 800 local searches (United States, November 2024) found that 58% of the sources ChatGPT used were business websites, 27% were other sites mentioning businesses, and 15% were directories.
  • Google Maps rankings carry over. In a field test published on 7 October 2026, 35.4% of ChatGPT’s, Claude’s, Gemini’s and Perplexity’s first picks were businesses in Google’s top three map results, compared with 22.8% of all their picks.
  • Assistants disagree. In the same test, the four assistants never all put the same business first, so you need to check each one.
  • Wrong details get repeated. The test found phone numbers in AI answers that did not match the business’s live Google listing. Inconsistent details cost you calls.

These studies are from the US. The way the assistants work is the same in Nigeria, but competition is lower here, so a business that does the basics well can stand out faster.

The 30-Day Plan

Week 1: Make sure AI can find you

  • Check your crawlers. Run the free AI Crawler Checker. If OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot is blocked by robots.txt, a security plugin or Cloudflare, unblock it.
  • Get indexed on Google and Bing. Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Bing matters because Copilot uses it, and many Nigerian sites never submit to it.
  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Add your exact category, address or service area, hours, WhatsApp number, photos and services. Follow our step-by-step Google Business Profile guide.
  • Write one business description and use it everywhere. See the template below.

Week 2: Make your website say it plainly

  • One page per service, with the city in it. “Event catering in Ikeja, Lagos” is easier for AI to match than a single “Our Services” page.
  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences of each page: what you do, where, for whom and from what price.
  • Prices in naira, in text. AI crawlers usually cannot read prices inside flyer images. A “from ₦” price written on the page gives the AI a fact to repeat.
  • An About page with proof. Your registered name, CAC RC number, address, year founded, team and phone number.
  • An FAQ on each key page answering the questions customers ask on WhatsApp: price, delivery areas, timelines, payment options.
  • Schema markup. Add LocalBusiness or Organization schema, plus Service and FAQPage schema. WordPress SEO plugins such as Rank Math can do most of this.

Week 3: Get other sites to confirm you

  • Nigerian directories. List your business with identical details on established directories such as VConnect and Finelib.
  • Industry platforms. Tripadvisor for hotels and restaurants, Clutch or GoodFirms for agencies and tech firms, and the professional bodies or associations in your sector.
  • Google reviews from real customers. Ask every satisfied customer, with a direct review link on WhatsApp. Never buy or write fake reviews.
  • LinkedIn company page with the same description, website and phone number.
  • One story for the press. A launch, a milestone, a new branch or useful data about your market can earn a mention in a Nigerian publication. In the BrightLocal study above, more than a quarter of ChatGPT’s sources were other sites mentioning businesses.

Week 4: Test, record and fix

  • Write 10 buyer questions, such as “best [your service] in [your city]” or “how much does [your service] cost in Nigeria”.
  • Ask each one in ChatGPT (with search on), Gemini, Google, Copilot, Perplexity and Meta AI on WhatsApp.
  • Record three things in a sheet: whether you are named, whether the details are correct, and which competitors and sources appear instead.
  • Fix the gaps. If a directory or article keeps being cited, get listed or featured there. If your details are wrong, correct them at the source.
  • Repeat every month. Answers change between sessions, so track the trend, not a single result.

Write a Business Description AI Can Repeat

AI assistants repeat what they read most often and most clearly. Write one plain description and use it, word for word, on your website, Google Business Profile, directories, LinkedIn and social bios.

Template: [Business name] is a [what you are] in [area, city] that [what you do] for [who]. [One fact: price, years, or what makes you different]. Call or WhatsApp [number].

Example (fictional): Adaeze Events is an event catering company in Ikeja, Lagos that caters weddings, birthdays and office events for 50 to 1,000 guests. Packages start from ₦8,000 per guest. Call or WhatsApp 0800 000 0000.

Compare that with “We deliver excellence in every bite.” The first gives AI a name, a service, a place, a customer, a price and a contact. The second gives it nothing to recommend.

Nigeria-Specific Tips

  • Use area names your customers type: Lekki, Ikeja, Victoria Island, Wuse, Garki, GRA Port Harcourt. “Lagos” alone competes with everyone.
  • Write your phone number one way everywhere, for example +234 800 000 0000, and include your WhatsApp number in text, not only as a button.
  • Don’t rely on Instagram alone. Many Nigerian businesses sell mainly on Instagram, but AI assistants rarely recommend a business they cannot confirm on a website and other sites.
  • Put your delivery and service areas in writing, such as “We deliver across Lagos Mainland and Island”, so AI can answer “who delivers to Ajah?”.
  • Keep your CAC name consistent with your trading name, or state both, so AI connects your registration, reviews and listings to one business.

What Does Not Work

  • Fake reviews and testimonials. They break Google’s policies and can get your profile suspended.
  • Anyone guaranteeing AI mentions. OpenAI, Google and Meta control their answers. A provider can guarantee the work, not the result.
  • Mass-produced AI content. Hundreds of thin, similar pages are treated as spam by Google, which hurts the index that Gemini and AI Overviews depend on.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating “best caterer in Lagos” twenty times reads as spam. One clear sentence works better.

How Long Before AI Starts Mentioning You?

Week 1 fixes can show results within weeks, because AI search reads your website as it is today. Being named for competitive questions such as “best [service] in Lagos” usually takes three to six months of steady listings, reviews and content. Businesses with few competitors online often see results sooner. Read more about measuring this in What is AI visibility?

Getting AI to Mention Your Business: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get AI to mention my business?

Make sure AI crawlers can reach your website, state clearly what you do, where and for how much, use identical business details everywhere, get listed and reviewed on trusted sites, and test the questions your buyers ask every month. AI assistants name businesses they can find, understand and see confirmed by other sources.

Can I pay to make ChatGPT or Gemini mention my business?

No. The answers themselves cannot be bought. Some platforms show paid ads beside the answer, but the businesses named inside the answer are chosen from what the AI finds and trusts on the web.

How long does it take for AI to start mentioning my business?

Fixing crawler access and indexing can show up within weeks, because AI search reads your site as it is today. Being named for competitive questions usually takes three to six months of consistent listings, reviews and content.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

Yes, especially for local questions. Google’s AI uses Google’s index and Business Profiles, and a 2026 field test found that the first business named by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity was more often one in Google’s top three map results.

Do I need a website, or is Instagram enough?

You need a website. AI assistants read websites far more easily than social media posts, and a 2024 BrightLocal study found business websites were the largest source ChatGPT used for local searches. Instagram helps, but it cannot replace a page that states your services, location and prices in text.

Which AI assistants should a Nigerian business check?

ChatGPT, Google (Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode), Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Meta AI, which works inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook in Nigeria. They often name different businesses for the same question, so test all of them.
