Why SEO matters more, not less, now that customers ask AI, and what has to change.
By Eniola Adeleke, Tech Researcher, AD Technologies · Updated September 2026
Short answer: yes. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews mostly build their answers from search indexes, so the businesses they recommend are usually the ones with strong SEO. What has changed is the goal: it is no longer only about ranking a link, but about being the clear, trusted source that AI quotes and names. That extra layer is called generative engine optimization (GEO).
Why AI Search Depends on SEO
- Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google’s own index. Google says there is no special trick to appear in them: pages must be indexed and follow normal SEO best practices.
- Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing’s index.
- ChatGPT searches the web with its own crawler and search partners, and cites the pages it uses.
- Perplexity crawls the web and cites sources in every answer.
If search engines can’t find, read or trust your website, AI assistants usually can’t either. Read why AI doesn’t mention your business.
What Has Changed
| Old SEO focus | SEO for the AI era |
|---|---|
| Ranking for a keyword | Being the answer to a customer’s full question |
| Long intros before the point | The direct answer in the first two sentences |
| Traffic as the only measure | Traffic, enquiries and AI mentions |
| Only your own website | Your website plus reviews, directories and mentions elsewhere |
| Vague marketing copy | Clear facts: services, cities, prices in naira, dates |
What Still Hasn’t Changed
- People still search. Buyers still type “[service] in Lagos”, check Google Maps and compare websites before calling.
- Local searches still lead with Google Maps. A strong Google Business Profile and reviews still win local customers.
- Technical basics still decide who gets seen: crawlable pages, speed on mobile and a secure site.
What to Do in 2026
- Fix the foundation: indexing in Google and Bing, speed, and access for AI crawlers. Check with our free AI Crawler Checker.
- Answer real buyer questions with direct, answer-first pages and naira prices.
- Build trust signals: reviews, directory listings and mentions on Nigerian websites.
- Track AI answers too: ask ChatGPT and Gemini your customers’ questions every month and see who they name.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will AI replace Google search?
AI is changing how people search, and Google itself now shows AI answers in its results. For businesses, the practical point is the same either way: the answers come from websites that search engines can find and trust.
Do AI Overviews mean fewer clicks to my website?
For simple questions, some people read the AI answer and don’t click. Being one of the cited sources keeps your business visible and brings the clicks that still happen.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO helps you rank in search engines. GEO helps AI assistants choose, quote and recommend you. GEO builds on SEO, so you need both. Read What Is GEO?
Should I stop blogging now that AI writes answers?
No. AI assistants need sources to answer from. Clear, factual articles about your area of expertise are exactly what they cite, especially with local detail that generic content lacks.
