How SEO and Google Ads differ in cost, speed and long-term value, and which one your business should start with.
By Eniola Adeleke, Tech Researcher, AD Technologies · Updated September 2026
Short answer: Google Ads brings customers fast but stops the moment you stop paying. SEO takes three to six months to build but keeps bringing customers without paying per click, and it also helps you appear in Google’s AI answers and ChatGPT. For most small businesses in Nigeria, the best plan is SEO as the foundation, with a small Google Ads budget for urgent, high-value searches while SEO grows.
SEO vs Google Ads at a Glance
| SEO | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | For the work: content, fixes and links | For every click, plus management |
| Speed | Usually 3 to 6 months for real results | Traffic within days of launching |
| When you stop paying | Rankings usually last for months | Traffic stops the same day |
| Trust | Many people skip ads and click normal results | Clearly labelled “Sponsored” |
| AI search | Helps you appear in Google AI Overviews and AI assistants | No effect on AI answers |
| Best for | Long-term, lower cost per customer | Launches, offers, testing and urgent demand |
What Each Costs in Nigeria
These are our own 2026 prices, excluding 7.5% VAT, so you can compare like for like:
- SEO and AI visibility: from ₦250,000 a month (Starter), with a 3-month minimum because search engines need time to re-evaluate a website. See how much SEO costs in Nigeria.
- Google Ads management: ₦70,000 a month plus 10% of ad spend, with a ₦100,000 one-off setup per platform.
- Ad spend: paid directly to Google. We recommend at least ₦300,000 a month so campaigns collect enough data to improve. At that level the total monthly cost is about ₦400,000.
The key difference: with ads, the ₦300,000 you spend this month buys this month’s clicks only. With SEO, the pages and rankings you build keep working after the month ends.
When Google Ads Is the Better Choice
- You need customers this month, for a launch, a new branch or a seasonal offer.
- Your service has urgent demand, such as emergency repairs, where people call the first result.
- You want to test an offer before investing in content and SEO.
- Each customer is worth a lot, so paying per click is still profitable.
When SEO Is the Better Choice
- You want customers every month without paying per click, and can wait a few months for results.
- People research before buying, reading guides, comparing prices and asking questions.
- You want to be recommended by AI. Ads don’t influence what ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews say about businesses. SEO and GEO do.
- Your budget is limited. Over time, SEO usually brings customers at a lower cost than ads.
The Approach That Works Best: Both, in Order
- Months 1 to 3: start SEO and run a focused Google Ads campaign on your most profitable searches, so leads come in while SEO builds.
- Months 4 to 6: as pages start ranking, move ad budget away from searches where you now rank well.
- After 6 months: keep SEO running and use ads only for launches, offers and competitive searches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does paying for Google Ads improve my SEO rankings?
No. Google keeps ads and normal rankings separate. Buying ads does not move you up in the free results.
How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?
Enough to get meaningful data. We recommend at least ₦300,000 a month in ad spend for a managed campaign. Smaller budgets can work for very local, low-competition searches, but results are harder to judge.
How long does SEO take in Nigeria?
Technical fixes can show within weeks, but ranking for competitive service searches usually takes three to six months of consistent work.
What about Facebook and Instagram ads?
They reach people who are not searching yet, which suits products, events and brand awareness. Google Ads reaches people actively searching, which suits services. Many businesses use both.
